Mindanao's abaca industry booming

TRIGGERED by stable buying prices, the abaca industry in Mindanao is booming, the Fiber Industry Development Authority (Fida) XI, said Tuesday.

"Right now, we have this so-called 'price war', the demand is high kaya mahal ang buying price," Milagros Laborada, fiber development officer of Fida XI said.

To date, abaca's buying price reaches P41 per kilo for the highest-grade abaca fibers.

Laborada said it was only late last year when abaca industry started to stabilize.

"Mataas ang demand ng abaca ngayon kasi may itatayo raw na pabrika somewhere in Leyte, na gagawa ng mga panels at upuan para sa Mercedez Benz," Laborada said.

Among the products of abaca are fibercrafts, cordage, textile/fabrics, pulp, and specialty papers like currency notes (e.g. Philippine money), cigarette paper, meat and sausage casings, teabags, stencil paper, capacitor paper, and other specialty papers that require high-porosity, excellent tear, bursting and tensile strength.

"Kaya rin mataas ang demand kasi marami ngang gamit ang abaca at matibay din 'to," Laborada said.

To date, the major buyers of abaca fiber are the local processors and manufacturers of pulp, cordage, and fibercrafts, who buy 60 percent of the total volume produced in the Philippines.

Raw abaca fiber is also exported to United States, United Kingdom, and Japan.

Processed abaca, on the other hand, are exported to Japan, Germany, United States, France, Singapore, Netherlands, Italy, and Korea, among others.

Laborada said that one of their major concerns right now is to control abaca diseases.

"Recently, we launched our Sagip Abaca program, which aims to control abaca diseases sa Davao Oriental," Laborada said.

Among the abaca-producing areas in Mindanao are Bukidnon, Agusan del Sur, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, South Cotabato, North Cotabato, Maguindanao, Surigao del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Lanao del Sur, Lanao del Norte, and Zamboanga del Sur.
